BELTS & HOSES 101

The belts and hoses in your vehicle are critical to its performance, but they are exposed to extreme hot and cold temperature, and can degenerate over time. Critical wear factors such as ozone, oil, heat and abrasion break down hose integrity and can reduce the overall lifespan of your engine dramatically. Hoses crack, and belts fray, stretch, and break. Fortunately these parts are often not all that costly, and can usually be replaced fairly easily.

ABOUT BELTS & HOSES

We always check for these critical signs of wear:

  • Cracking and fraying on the top cover
  • Glazing and slipping of the belt’s sides
  • Grooves between the ribs of timing belts
  • High-pitched whines or squeals
  • Leaking hoses

I hear a squealing sound when I accelerate. Why?

A squealing sound when you hit the gas pedal is almost always a symptom of a loose or worn belt. Sometimes the belt can be tightened, but often it’s time to replace it. Belt replacement is not usually very expensive, but if it’s slipping then it’s probably not performing another task very well, and that could lead to more expensive problems down the road.

What are these spots I’ve noticed on my driveway?

Spots on the driveway can be caused by a number of things, but if it’s oily or coloured in any way it’s likely that you have a leak. The most common causes of leaks are cracked hoses. Again, replacing a hose is often not very expensive, but that leak could lead to bigger issues if it’s not fixed.
