CAR HEATING & A/C 101

Canada’s combination of cold winters and hot summers mean that your vehicle’s heating and air conditioning system is vital. It can be hard to notice if your car’s heating or air conditioning system is not as effective as it once was. There are very few system warnings or blinking lights to alert you when something’s going wrong, but there are tell-tale signs to watch out for.

ABOUT YOUR CAR HEATING & A/C

Car heating systems generally use the heat from your vehicle’s engine to warm air that is pushed into the vehicle interior. It is important to have a functioning heater, not only for vehicle comfort, but also for safety. If heat is unable to pass into your vehicle, you’ll find it difficult to keep your windshield and side windows clear on those cold mornings.

Your air conditioning is comprised of two major components: the compressor and expansion valve. The compressor acts as the heart of your air conditioner, pumping refrigerant through the cooling system and lowering the average air temperature. The expansion valve controls refrigerant flow, introducing the volumes of refrigerant necessary for cooling air to desired temperatures. If you’re experiencing difficulty achieving or maintaining a cool temperature, it could be an issue with one of these components.

Some of the major symptoms of a malfunctioning or faulty heating or air-conditioning system include:

  • Unusual smells
  • Low air pressure or weak air flow
  • Irregular temperatures
  • Strange noises when the system is on

My air conditioning isn’t as cold as it once was. Why is that?

There are a couple of factors that affect your onboard air conditioning system: pressure and temperature. If either of these elements fails, your experience may change dramatically. When air temperature fluctuates, you may not notice problem right away but the longer the problem persists the worst it will get.  When temperature fluctuations occur, this can be the result of a failed compressor clutch. While odors and pressure loss are generally signs of a Freon leak, when detected early we have the chance to make a quick, easy repair. The longer your leak lasts, the more costly the repair. Don’t lose your cool; visit us to find out how we can help.

Certain smells linger in the car for hours. Is this an A/C issue?

If your son’s hockey bag smell is still going strong long after the season is finished, there may be an issue with your A/C. Either your cabin air filter needs replacing or there’s a moldy evaporator case behind the offensive smell. Dirty air cabin filters can become contaminated with particles that get trapped in the filter, releasing unwanted odors into the cabin. Moldy evaporator cases can cause the same problem. When water builds up in the evaporator case, mold grows, releasing airborne pathogens into the car cabin. We can help you with either problem.

Why won’t my car heat up?

This could be as simple as a blown fuse, a kinked hose, a broken fan, or a host of other issues. While you could spend time trying to diagnose this problem yourself, we’ve got the tools and the experience to quickly get to the root of the problem and help you get it resolved.
